Young People of Derby Have Their Say

(Derby City UK Youth Parliament Elections 2006)

Young people from across the City have participated in events that saw two of their peers elected to represent them at the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP).

Democracy in Action

The first event held on Wednesday 15th February at the Spot saw over 70 young people attending. They were supported by the Youth Service. During the evening they learnt about the UKYP and joined in a quiz that tested their knowledge about politics both nationally and locally.

The Candidates and Out Going MPs

The second event took place on Saturday 18th February at the Assembly Rooms. This event attracted over 60 young people and  had a dual focus: the UKYP elections and the launch of this web site.
During the afternoon there was live entertainment from local bands Trinity and Beats Capri and everyone had the opportunity to paint a design on T shirts, with the help of Q Arts.

Candidate Jenna

The focus of the events was the speeches by the 5 candidates, who were Zaire Sheppard, Jenna Winson, Ayesha Chourdhrey, Adam Tempest and Ashley Marvin. Each candidate had to stand in front of their peers and tell them why they would make a good member of the Youth Parliament ( MYP). All five did a great job of trying to convince their peers that they were the best candidate!

Candidate Ayesha

There were a total of 106 votes cast and although it was close Jenna and Zaire gained the most votes and were duly being elected as Derby’s MYPs. Ayesha, Adam, Ashley and although unsuccessful have become Deputy Members of the UKYP.

Candidate Adam

All five young people will get involved with UKYP on both local and regional levels. In addition the two MYPs will attend the Annual Sitting of the Youth Parliament. This is a gathering of young people from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This year it will be held at Leicester University.
